Tara Elisha started out as a solo rock artist writing and performing her own music. With a Master’s degree in music, she applies some of the structure from her formal music education but then fractures that formality presenting her audience with a melodic voice surrounded by heavy electric guitar, bass, drums, synthensizer, and exotic instrumental sounds. This unique sound has been described as a mix of Paramore and The Cranberies. Tara Elisha has evolved into a five member band composed of a lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboard, with Tara performing lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and additional keyboard on some songs. Tara released ‘Phantom’, her debut album, consisting of 11 original songs in 2012 and is currently performing live the music from her album.
After recording ‘Phantom’ in the studio, Tara approached Becky Kunard, a well respected keyboardist in the region, about performing the material at live shows. Becky was impressed with the quality of Tara’s music and was excited about getting back into a band so she signed on very early to play keyboard and sing back-up vocals. Becky has played many venues in the Kansas City area when she was in other bands in the past. She has what can only be described as a perfect ear combined with amazing keyboard skills and beautiful vocal harmonies. Tara thought that finding the perfect lead guitarist was going to be like looking for a diamond in an icebox. But as luck would have it, Scott Roby who was a very talented lead guitarist had just left one band and was looking for something new. Scott has been in several bands over the years and has helped bands just starting out to get established. After listening to some samples from Phantom, he was interested in meeting Tara. Tara auditioned Scott and Scott auditioned Tara and they hit it off immediately. They both recognized enormous talent in the other and saw great potential in working together. Tara was impressed enough with Scott’s skill and experience that she made him the musical director of the band. When looking for a bass guitar player, again lady luck appeared to be smiling down on Tara when she snagged Dan Munyoki who had only recently moved to the United States from Kenya where he had been performing music to make his living. In his audition, Dan picked up his part of the original songs that he was asked to perform with very little preparation. Tara, Becky, and Scott were very impressed with his talent. Dan brings a real exotic and world presence to this local band. In addition to his tremendous skill at the bass he also adds diversity and flare to the group. He also show cases his acoustic guitar skills in some of the music.
Tara Elisha and the band have now been rehearsing all of the original material from the ‘Phantom’ album over the summer. Many people who have heard the album and have been anxious to hear it performed live will now have their chance. If you would like to give a local crowd an opportunity to hear Tara Elisha perform in your club, please contact me and we can set up a date.
